Accommodation

Choose a Kyoto base that fits your route and your evenings.

Choose a base, not just a bed

Find the right Kyoto base.

Kyoto's neighbourhoods feel very different. Choose around your transport needs, your main sightseeing area, and the kind of evening you want.

01

Kyoto Station

The easiest base for trains, luggage and multi-city trips.

  • Direct access to Shinkansen, JR, subway and city buses.
  • Easy for Osaka, Nara, Uji, late arrivals and early departures.
  • Large hotels, restaurants, shopping and convenience stores are concentrated here.

The area feels modern rather than traditionally Kyoto.

02

Shijo Kawaramachi and Gion

The best base for dining, shopping and evening walks.

  • Close to the Kamo River, Pontocho, Hanamikoji and Nishiki Market.
  • Hankyu and Keihan make east-west and Osaka connections simple.
  • Expect higher prices and more visitors during peak seasons.

03

Saiin

A practical local base with balanced transport and everyday life.

  • Hankyu connects Saiin with Omiya, Karasuma and Kyoto-Kawaramachi.
  • Randen provides a local route towards Arashiyama and western Kyoto.
  • Supermarkets, pharmacies, izakaya, ramen shops and cafés make evenings easy.
  • A strong choice for longer stays and second-time visitors.

It is a neighbourhood base, not a temple district. Kyoto Station is better for a one-night Shinkansen connection.

04

Higashiyama and Kiyomizu-dera

The classic choice for early walks and traditional streets.

  • Walk to Kiyomizu-dera, Sannenzaka, Ninenzaka, Yasaka Pagoda and Kodaiji.
  • Early morning and evening are the calmest times for photography.
  • Steep lanes, stone paving and limited vehicle access can make luggage difficult.

05

Arashiyama

A slower base for nature, rivers, gardens and ryokan stays.

  • Stay close to the bamboo grove, Togetsukyo Bridge and riverside paths.
  • Ryokan and onsen make this a good one-night retreat.
  • Daily trips to eastern Kyoto take longer, so it works best for a west-Kyoto focused stay.

06

Fushimi Inari

A useful base for sunrise at the torii gates and a Uji day.

  • Walk to Fushimi Inari before the main crowds arrive.
  • JR Nara Line and Keihan Main Line provide useful connections.
  • Evening dining and shopping are quieter than in Kawaramachi.

07

Nijo-jo and Karasuma Oike

A balanced centre with good subway access and newer hotels.

  • Easy subway connections to Kyoto Station, Shijo, Nijo-jo and Higashiyama.
  • Quieter than Gion, with cafés, restaurants and convenience stores nearby.
  • The traditional atmosphere is less immediate than in Higashiyama.

08

Omiya

A central-west base with local dining and strong rail links.

  • Hankyu connects Omiya to Karasuma and Kawaramachi.
  • Randen makes Arashiyama convenient.
  • Izakaya and local restaurants stay active in the evening, usually at lower prices than Kawaramachi.

09

Kinkaku-ji area

Quiet and residential, but less convenient for cross-city sightseeing.

  • Useful for a slow west-north Kyoto itinerary near Kinkaku-ji, Ryoan-ji and Ninna-ji.
  • Bus travel to Kyoto Station, Kawaramachi and Higashiyama takes longer.
  • Night-time dining and shopping are limited.
