Aoi Matsuri, Simply Planned

Where to stand, when to arrive, and how to keep Kyoto's May procession calm.

Aoi Matsuri moves at a ceremonial pace from the Imperial Palace toward the Kamo shrines. Its beauty is in the textiles, horses, fresh aoi leaves, and long silences between groups.

The procession is held on May 15. Reserved viewing seats offer the clearest plan; free roadside viewing requires an early arrival and patience.

Bring water and sun protection, avoid stepping into the route, and do not follow the procession through narrow residential streets.
