What to know

Honke Owariya is best approached as a Kyoto lunch, not a trophy reservation. The main shop serves soba in a historic wooden townhouse and uses Kyoto well water in its dashi.

What to order

The signature Horai soba is the ceremonial choice, but a simple bowl of hot or cold soba shows the broth more clearly. Seasonal sweets connect the restaurant to its origins as a confectioner.

The main restaurant does not take reservations. Arrive near opening on a weekday or accept a wait. The compact hours make it a natural stop between the Imperial Palace, Nijo Castle, and Karasuma Oike.
