Gion Matsuri After Dark

Gion Matsuri is best understood as a living neighborhood festival, not a race to photograph every float.

A calmer route

Begin near Shijo-Karasuma before sunset, choose three or four floats, and spend time noticing their textiles, music, and neighborhood traditions. Walk toward Karasuma-Oike rather than crossing the same crowded streets twice.

For 2026, early Yoiyama is July 14-16 and the first procession is July 17. Late Yoiyama is July 21-23, followed by the second procession on July 24. Use public transport, carry water, and leave space for residents.
